PROFILE AND HISTORY
GUTEK FILM was founded in 1994 to promote independent filmmakers and to distribute their films. The company has released so far almost 250 productions which attracted over 10,5 million admissions in Poland. GUTEK FILM introduced and released many films by such eminent film directors as Peter Greenaway, Pedro Almodovar, Lars von Trier, Mike Keigh, Jim Jarmusch, Derek Jarman, Park Chan-wook, Paul Cox or Wong Kar-Wai.
Roman Gutek is the founder and co-owner of the company. In the 80s, he organised multiple film events promoting world cinema and directors that were almost unknown at that time in Poland. Not only did Roman Gutek form Warsaw Film Festival in 1985 and acted as its director until 1992 but he also became one of the founders of Film Art Foundation and its distribution director between 1990 and 1994. Moreover, between 1995 and 2000, Roman Gutek became a program director of SUMMER FILM FESTIVAL in Kazimierz Dolny. In 2001, he formed a film festival that in 2002 acquired a name of ERA NEW HORIZONS and was held in Cieszyn. Since 2006 this festival has moved to Wroclaw. Roman Gutek was granted the prestigious Paszport Polityki award in 2003 for his achievements towards promoting culture and cultural activities in Poland. This award is granted annually by one of the most influential weekly magazines in Poland.
Since 1994, GUTEK FILM has run Warsaw-based cinema Muranow. Apart from its consistent art house repertoir and regular film premieres, Muranow also hosts numerous festivals and retrospectives. In 2004, Muranow was named the best cinema within the most exclusive network of the European cinemas called EUROPA CINEMAS. Muranow has been a member of this network since 1994.
Many prominent filmmakers add splendour to the film premieres organised by GUTEK FILM. Among such distinguished guests, GUTEK FILM had a pleasure to welcome the participation of Wim Wenders, Peter Greenaway, Michaelangelo Antonioni, Mira Sorvino, Liv Ullman, Paul Auster, Quay brothers, Sophie Marceau, Andrzej Zulawski, Lena Endre, Darren Aronofsky, Francois Ozon, Geraldine Chaplin, Gus van Sant, Otar Ioseliani, Lech Majewski and Petr Zelenka to name but a few.
